Types of IELTS Test
There are two variations of IELTS test: IELTS Academic Test and IELTS General Training Test. IELTS Academic Test is required for those who wish to study in Universities and institutes of higher education. IELTS General Training Test is required for those who want to go abroad for work, are applying for immigration and are about to study at secondary level or take part in various kinds of training.
The Listening and speaking part is same for both tests but they differ in writing and reading. The writing and reading assignments for those taking Academic Test is complex compared to those who take General Training Test.

IELTS Format
The test is composed of four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The first three part listening, reading and writing are taken in the same day with no breaks in between. Speaking test can be taken up to one week before or after these tests. Your test center will advise you about the date of your speaking test.
You will receive score on a band of 0 to 9. You will get a score for each module and an overall score.
Test duration: 2 hours 45 minutes (approximately).
- IELTS READING TEST
The time required for IELTS Reading Test is 60 minutes.
Academic Test takers will face three long texts. General Training Test takers will face three sections- first section with two or three short texts, second section with two short texts and third section with one long text. Both types of test takers will receive 40 questions based on these texts.
The questions will aim to test your ability to gather gist from a piece of writing, read in detail, comprehend logical argument and understand the point of view of the writer.
The pieces of writing are chosen from course and non course books, journals, newspapers etc. The content will be suitable for a non-specialist user.
- IELTS WRITING TEST
The time required for IELTS Writing Test is 60 minutes.
Both Academic Test takers and attendees of General Training Test must face two tasks.
The first task for Academic Test is to explain in your own words the information present in a graph, chart or a table that will be presented to you. The second task will be to write an essay in response to a point of view, problem or an argument.
The first task for General Training Test is to write a letter explaining (or asking further information about) a situation that will be presented to you. The second task is to write an essay in response to an argument, problem or a point of view.
- IELTS SPEAKING TEST
The time required for IELTS Speaking test is 11-14 minutes.
The test will be taken on a one versus one basis with an examiner. You will be presented with three tasks. The test is same for both Academic and General Training Exams.
Task 1: This is the introduction part. The examiner will ask you general things about you, your family, your further study plan, interests etc. This part will last about 4-5 minutes.
Task 2: You will be provided a card. You will have to talk for about one to two minutes about the topic in the card. You will have a one minute preparation time before starting to speak.
Task 3: The examiner asks you further questions about the topic you spoke about in part two. Your ability to speak in detail about something, explain it etc. will be tested in this section.
- IELTS LISTENING TEST
The time required for IELTS Listening Test is 30 minutes.
The Listening Test is same for both Academic and General Training Exams.
You will listen to four recordings and answer 10 questions based on each recording.
Part One: Conversation between two people about general everyday matters.
Part Two: A single person talking about a general everyday matter like the state of a local park.
Part Three: Conversation between up to four people based on an educational context, e.g. a professor and a couple of students discussing about the upcoming exams.
Part Four: A single person talking about an academic matter, e.g. a lecture by a professor.
