American College Testing (ACT) is a test that is taken by students for undergraduate level entry in US Universities. ACT is one of the two most widely accepted tests for undergraduate level admission, the other being SAT. The first ACT test was taken in 1959. More than two million students take ACT tests each year.

There are four compulsory sections of the test – English, Mathematics, Reading and Science Reasoning. An optional Writing Test is also a part of the ACT exams. Each compulsory sections are marked in the range of 1 to 36. The total composite score is also scaled in the range of 1 to 36. The marks for the writing section is not a part of the total composite score. It is separately scored in range from 2 to 12.

The test aims to gauge the general educational level of students seeking entry into undergraduate courses by testing their ability to complete high school level works. The total duration for the test is 2 hours and 55 minutes. The cost for the exam is $46 without the writing test. It is $62.50 with the writing test.

ACT Test Format

There are four sections of the ACT test apart from the optional writing section. The score for these sections – English, Mathematics, Reading and Science Reasoning – are distributed on a range of 1 to 36 for each section. The combined score is also provided on a range of 1 to 36.

You will get a total of 2 hours and 55 minutes to complete the test.

There are 75 questions in the section and you will be provided 45 minutes to answer these questions. This section will consist of five passages with various portions underlined for correction. You will correct these underlined portions on the other side of the page.

The problems will test your ability to understand sentence structure and correct if they are wrong. It will also check if or not you have the ability to properly use apostrophes, commas, colons, semi-colons etc.

This section consists of 60 questions to be answered in 60 minutes. You can make use of calculators to answer the questions. The questions cover topics like plane geometry, pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, co-ordinate geometry and elementary trigonometry.

There are five choices of answer for each question. This is unlike other sections, which has four choices of answer. The questions get tougher as you move on, with the first question the least toughest and the last question being the toughest.

There are 40 questions in this section to be answered in 35 minutes. There are four parts to this section. The first three parts contain one long passage while the last part contains two short passages.

Your ability to grasp key ideas, reason, understand cause-effect and infer the intent of the author is tested in this section. Most often, you will have to answer the questions based on the explicit meaning of the text and sometimes, you will have to answer the questions based on the message implicitly stated by the author.

There are 40 questions in this section to be answered in 35 minutes. You will be provided with seven different passages, with each passage followed by five to seven questions. The passages are of three types – Data Representation, Research Summary and Conflicting View Points.

The content of the passages are graphs, charts, conflicting view point from researchers and scientists, and summary of experiments. Knowledge of high-school biology, chemistry and physics is a prerequisite for this section. However, your ability to reason with provided data and cases if of greater importance.

ACT SCORE MEANING

You will receive a score in the range of 1 to 36 for each section of your ACT Test and a composite score, also in the range of 1 to 36. The composite score is the average of scores of the four individual sections. The average is rounded to the nearest integer.

You will first receive a raw score for each section. The English Section, for e.g. has 75 questions with each question carrying one marks. The score of the section will then be scaled in range of 1 to 36.

The average ACT score for 2016 was 20.8. This means anything above 21 will normally put you ahead of most students. You will, however, need score around or better than 30 for placement at top Universities in US. You must also note that ACT score is not the only prerequisite for admission but is one of the many factors for consideration.

Since you will be competing with other students for placement, your percentile rank is of greater importance in comparison to your absolute score. A percentile rank tells the percent of students you were better than. A 80th percentile rank means you were better than or equal to 80 percent of all exam takers.
