TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a English Language Proficiency Test for non-native speakers of the language. It is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The test is composed of reading, listening, speaking and writing. TOEFL is accepted by more than 10,000 educational institutions and agencies in over 130 countries.
TOEFL is one of the oldest standardized test of the English Language, with the first test being taken in 1964. The test is for students planning to study abroad, candidates who are applying for scholarship and grants, English Language learners who want to keep track of their progress and people who are about to apply for immigration to a English speaking country.

TOEFL Format
TOEFL is composed of four parts: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Each part has a full marks of 30, with the overall score being 120. Reading and listening test are administered first, followed by a 10 minute break. Speaking and writing test will be taken after the break.
You can take the TOEFL iBT Test as many times as you like but not more than once in a 12 day period.

- TOEFL READING TEST
The reading section contains 3 or 4 passages taken from a University level textbook. The passages are around 700 words long. You will be provided 12-14 questions from each passages. You will get 60-80 minutes to answer all the questions in the section.
The passages will be taken from a wide variety of topics. You need not worry if you are not familiar with the topic because all the information necessary for answering the questions correctly will be in the passage.
This section will test your ability to understand cause and effect, compare-contrast, grasp ideas, understand intent etc.
- TOEFL WRITING TEST
The writing section is 50 minutes long and is composed of two parts – Integrated Writing Task and Independent Writing.
In the integrated writing task, you will read a short passage and listen to a short lecture about the topic you read in the passage. You will then write a summary of the passage and the lecture, including key points and ideas. The time provided for this task is 20 minutes.
In the independent task, you will write an essay in response to a topic provided to you. The essay must include your opinion and choices about the given topic. You must explain your opinion in detail. The time provided for this section is 30 minutes.
- TOEFL SPEAKING TEST
The speaking section consists of six tasks and you will have 20 minutes to complete these tasks.
The first two questions are Independent Tasks. You will be asked to provide an opinion about a familiar topic and you will do so based upon personal experience, knowledge and ideas. Your ability to convey ideas by speaking spontaneously will be tested here.
The other four are Integrated Speaking Tasks. In the first two of the integrated tasks, you will listen to a lecture or a conversation and read a short passage about a topic. You will then answer questions based on what you heard and read. In the remaining two integrated tasks, you will listen to a lecture or a conversation and answer questions based on that.
- TOEFL LISTENING TEST
The listening test is composed of six parts. You will be given 60-90 minutes to complete the test. Each part is a 3-4 minute long recording followed by questions based on the recording.
Two of these six recording are conversations. They are generally a conversation between a student and a professor or a college authority. The conversations will be followed by five questions.
Four of these recordings are academic lecture. These lectures are taken from real classroom but test takers must not necessarily have prior knowledge about the subject matter of the lecture. Each lecture is followed by six questions.
TOEFL SCORE BREAKDOWN - WHAT EACH BAND MEANS
Each section of the TOEFL Test – Reading, Speaking, Listening and Writing – carries a score in the range of 0 to 30. These scores are then added to obtain a total score in the range of 0 to 120. Here is what the scores you obtain mean.
